The investment volume for the new cable car project amounts to 28.1 million Swiss francs.

The world’s first convertible cable car has a capacity to take 60 people at a time. The Cabrio starts from Kalti and takes the passages up to the summit station. The car moves on two side-mounted support cables – a technological innovation of Garaventa AG, a central Swiss cable car company.Company’s vision was to enhance the experience during the journey. The length of the new cable car is 2.3 kilometres – a journey the cable car will complete at an impressive speed of eight metres a second.In total, the ride will take just over six minutes to ferry passengers up the Stanserhorn.

The ride up to Stanserhorn is also a journey through local history. One witness is the old-timer funicular from Stans to Kälti. When it opened in 1893, it broke the record for the world’s longest funicular. Indeed, pioneers have enjoyed an affinity with Stanserhorn for some 120 years. And while historical gems like the old-timer funicular will remain at Stanserhorn, the new CabriO will bring the mountain a fresh breath of air.

The new CabriO cable car’s base statione is 711 meters above sea level and mountain station is 1900 meters above sea level with a capacity of carrying 465 guests per hour.This new intervention will definitely increase the tourism of Switzerland.

The MIT SOFT Rockers are energy charging stations disguised as outdoor rocking lounge furniture.  The SOFT Rocker balances to create an interactive 1.5 axis 35 watt solar tracking system. Soft power electronics designed for this project charge the 12 ampere-hour battery and store solar energy harvested during the day.The slide or sloop form of the SOFT Rockers explores how standard softwood panels can be mass-customized to adapt to the latitude and sun angle of any site using parametric design software and automated fabrication with a lightweight Kuka robotic arm.

The SOFT Rockers are made from flat MDF panels which have undergone an advanced digital curving process based on the Zipshape process that was originally developed in Switzerland by Christoph Schindler. Zipshape is a new universal method that makes it possible to fabricate single curved panels from any plain material without molds. An element consists of two individually slotted panels that interlock only when bent to the predefined curvature.

“Zipshape can, in theory, be cut from any flat-packed material, but there are reasons to cut it out of MDF and then post-veneer the surfaces, as we did”, the team’s Phil Seaton told Gizmag. “Basically, the ‘teeth’ that we cut work best when they’re cut out of some grain-free and laminate-free material: cutting out of solid or plywood can cause the teeth to chip out during the cutting process. On the other hand, cutting out of MDF alone (and not veneering afterwards) risks the material not being able to handle the tension loads, and breaking in the backing (which is generally only about 2mm thick or so). Two such panels were then interlocked and glued together to form a curved structure, and then vacuum-sealed in plastic bags. When the glue had dried, they were removed from the bags, veneer applied to both sides and then placed back in the bags.A lightweight Kuka robotic arm was used to remove portions of the structurally unsound wood to form an inside surface resembling a row of teeth.

Minebea Co., Ltd. (“Minebea”) has recently developed a next-generation input device dubbed “COOL LEAF”, which is overall flat and can be used for input devices—such as keyboards, remote controllers and calculators—in collaboration with Kazuo KAWASAKI, Ph. D. (Design Director, Doctor of medical science).

The COOL LEAF features a flat design in which all key tops are removed. Conventional key tops were not flat and required great care in cleaning. They also tended to become dirty with dirt or dust easily accumulated on their surface or inside. The COOL LEAF adopts one single board, thus enabling easy input surface cleaning and clean maintenance at any time. It also adopts an innovative design in which characters appear on its mirror panel, which uses a light guide plate-type backlight.

The Minebea COOL LEAF is a completely flat keyboard, with no surface texture at all. Instead, you get a super-shiny mirrored surface, created from “2000 layers of PET film”, whatever that means. A complex grid of force sensors detect your keypresses on the surface. The keys are illuminated from underneath the surface of the mirror, making them easy to see in a darkened room. It also offers an adjustable keypress beep to help provide feedback. Another advantage of the smooth surface is that you’ll never have to worry about dirt getting stuck between keys (although it will surely be a fingerprint magnet). English, German, French, Italian versions will follow after July.
